Junior Dixieland Band

The Junior Dixieland Band is made up of ten young musicians from the Western Bohemian spa town of Mariánské Lázně in the Czech Republic, led by Mr Bedřich Smrčka.

Junior Dixieland, Mariánské Lázně Music School jazz band, which may be the youngest Dixieland band in the world, consists of students from 12 to 20 years of age. They have previously toured to Australia where their professional, enthusiastic performances were a great success among the Czech community at Sokol in Sydney, the CzechoSlovakian Country Club in Sydney, Beseda Club in Canberra, among students at a number of schools in Canberra, Cooma and Jindabyne and among the audience at the jazz festival in Wagga Wagga.

Junior Dixieland delighted listeners with their varied repertoire, from traditional Dixieland music to compositions by Czech and international masters (Jaroslav Ježek, George Gershwin), with unprecedented instruments (washboard, sousaphone, violinophone) and above all with the great enthusiasm displayed by the young musicians.

The tour to New Zealand is made possible by grants and sponsorship from the Czech Ministry of Education, the Mariánské Lázně Music School as well as other Czech sponsors.
